Melichar is an Assistant Professor in the College of Business and Department of Economics, Finance and Marketing. He is a macroeconomist specializing in time series econometrics and energy. Much of his research focuses on the U.S. state level and regional response to energy price shocks. He has taught classes in Principles of Macroeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Money & Banking, The Economics of Sports and MBA International Experience. The award was presented at the 2019 Spring Workshop: The Missing Link where Dr. Melichar and two other presenters talked about aspects of teaching and learning that may be forgotten, overlooked, or undervalued.

He was chosen to receive this award for his interest in economic education and his use of popular media such as clips from movies, television shows, and music to help students make a deeper and longer lasting connection with course material. He developed a web site called Econ Gone Country where he shows examples of economics in country music. Each video has information about the song including title, artist and lyrics. It also includes the economic concept and details about the concept throughout the song.
