Stephen Dubetz

Dr. Stephen Dubetz is principal clarinet in the Madison Gamer Symphony and second clarinet for the Lakeside Symphony, and plays regularly with the Erie Philharmonic and the Lincoln Symphony. He was principal clarinet for the Oshkosh Symphony. He has played for the Cleveland Orchestra and Blue Water Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared as a soloist with the UW–Madison Symphony Orchestra, UW—Madison’s Concert Choir, the Erie Philharmonic’s In Your Hometown series and the Bowling Green Philharmonia. He is a founding member of Driftless Reeds. He has played with Density 512, the Lakeside Symphony Wind Quintet, the Madison Chamber Players, and C8dence. Stephen has held teaching positions at UW—Oshkosh and Kent State University. Past teachers include Alicia Lee, Ami Vardi, Kevin Schempf, Willow Digiacomo, and Lee Gibson.

Dr. Dubetz’s research centers around the intersection of mindful and musical practice. His recent work, Meditative Clarinet: a Guide for Integrating Mindfulness and Clarinet Playing, lays out a method for approaching the clarinet meditatively. He has lectured on the topic at UW—Madison’s Single Reed Day, as well as studio classes in the woodwind area. He taught a 5-day “Meditation for Musicians” course at UW—M’s Summer Music Clinic, the second longest running summer music camp in the country, where he also teaches clarinet classes.

Stephen holds a DMA from the University of Wisconsin—Madison with a minor in Arts Administration, an MM from Kent State University, and a BME from Bowling Green State University, where he graduated magna cum laude
