School of Interdisciplinary Studies - Interdisciplinary Computing

Interdisciplinary Computing

Interdisciplinary Computing is a dynamic program for students who want more than a traditional computer science degree. It allows you to combine a solid foundation in computing with another field you’re passionate about—such as science, environment, arts, or health. You’ll learn how to think critically, tackle complex real‑world problems, and design innovative solutions by connecting technology with your chosen discipline. If you’re excited about using computing to make an impact across fields, this program is designed with you in mind.

Program Highlights

  • Customized Specialization: Tailor your degree to your unique interests by pairing Computer Science with a secondary field you're passionate about
  • Applied Learning: Move beyond the classroom with a mandatory Capstone project that gives you hands-on experience solving industry-specific problems.
  • Versatile Career Outlook: Graduate with a dual skillset that is highly sought after in specialized tech sectors, from environmental tech to digital communications.

Is Interdisciplinary Computing for You?

The Healthcare Innovator

You want to use data to improve patient outcomes but don't want to be a doctor.

The Social Justice Advocate

You want to build tools that make the legal system more equitable.

The Creative Technologist

You want to blend digital media and art with backend programming.

The Eco-Data Scientist

You want to fight climate change using the power of big data. You’re passionate about analyzing environmental trends, modeling sustainable urban planning, or building software to track and protect wildlife.

Curriculum

First Year Foundations

Focuses on establishing a strong base in algorithmic thinking with Python, mathematical reasoning, and an introduction to the core principles of interdisciplinary computing.

The Computing Core

Dive into technical essentials including Data Structures, Software Development, Data Science, AI, and Discrete Structures. These courses serve as the engine for applying computing to any field.

Your Cognate Area

This is where you specialize. Starting in your sophomore year, you will take a five-course sequence (Cognate I-V) in a secondary field, like Environment, Health, or Communications, to become an expert in that domain.

Capstone Project

The "Crown Jewel" of the degree. During your junior and senior years, you will complete a three-part series of Cognate Computing Studios where you apply your technical skills to solve a real-world problem within your chosen specialization.
