Agriculture
USDA Research Geneticist (Research Associate)
Description: The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the United States Department of Agriculture's
chief scientific research agency and one of the world's premiere scientific organizations.
ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research
on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.
Duties include: Will perform plant breeding and quantitative genetics, or a related
scientific discipline, to develop segregating populations of spring oat by incorporating
key traits into elite germplasm.
Will genotype, select, and advance oat lines using genomics-assisted selection methods.
Perform linkage mapping, genome-wide association, and gene expression studies to better
understand the genomic basis of variation for key traits, including grain yield, milling
quality, and disease resistance. Location: Fargo, North Dakota.
Open & closing dates: 12/18/2024 to 12/17/2025
Salary: $72,553 - $94,317 per year
USDA Research Plant Pathologist/Plant Physiologist/Geneticist (Research Associate)
Description: Duties include: Lead research projects to generate a complex dataset to evaluate and
identify promising plant genes associated with wheat nutritional integrity and Fusarium
Head Blight (FHB) disease resistance.
Generate a transcriptomic dataset to accelerate wheat breeding strategies for adaptive
plant defense and nutritional integrity with rising CO2. Inoculate wheat with fungal
pathogens and evaluate disease outcomes. Conduct an integrative transcriptomic and
gene co-expression network analysis of host and host × pathogen response to elevated
CO2. Compare wheat nutritional integrity at elevated CO2. Location: Peoria, Illinois.
Open & closing dates: 01/07/2025 to 01/06/2026
Salary: $73,939 - $96,116 per year
Biology
ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associate- Microbial Synthetic
Description: In this position, you will develop genetic engineering tools for non-model microbes, such as 1) anaerobic members of microbial communities to enable the engineering of microbes in the cow rumen, and 2) other non-model microbial organisms for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals from waste plastic or lignocellulosic biomass. Examples include development of transformation methods, development of gene expression “genetic parts”, and utilization of CRISPR-Cas and recombineering systems to enable multiplex, targeted manipulation of the genome. As needed, you will delete or over express genes, validate the responsible genetic changes, characterize the impact on cell physiology, and link the genotypes to specific phenotypes of interest using Next Generation Sequencing, Systems Biology, and other approaches.
Position Posted: 01/04/2025.
USDA Research Geneticist/Molecular Biologist/Microbiologist
Description: The incumbent will be assigned to the US Dairy Forage Research Center located in Madison, Wisconsin. The incumbent will investigate the microbial organisms in the cattle rumen that are responsible for methane emission. The research is expected to advance our understanding of the microbial protein coding genes contributing to methane production in dairy cattle.
Salary: $72,553 - $113,047 per year.
Open & closing dates: 06/18/2024 to 06/17/2025.
Chemistry
ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associate - Synthetic Organic and Polymer Chemist
Description: We are seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates who will focus on the synthesis of various polymer building blocks including oligoamides, acrylate and methacrylate monomers, and cycloalkenes and their polymerization to form polyamides, polymerized ionic liquids, and new intrinsically recyclable polymeric materials. This position resides in the Soft Materials and Membranes Group in the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The research will support collaborative efforts on enzyme engineering, which aims to polymerize and depolymerize commodity plastics such as Nylons and aliphatic polyesters, the study of photo-responsive polymerized ionic liquids for energy storage applications, and the development of novel intrinsically recyclable polymer systems. For additional information, contact Dr. Jeff Foster (fosterjc@ornl.gov).
