Adult Learning 2+2 Program
What is Adult Learning?
The Adult Learning Community at Tennessee Tech provides support and resources to our students over the age of 25. It’s important for you to know that you have a place to go for assistance when planning for your educational future. We can help answer questions, assist with advisement and course planning, and more! Our innovative programs allow you to fit your classes into your busy life. In addition, we have a fully-online degree program that allows you to take classes when you want, from anywhere. Our talented advisement staff will work out a customized program to allow you to complete your degree on your timetable.
What is the 2+2 Program?
- This program was developed in partnership with local community colleges to meet the needs of adult, non-traditional students who are not able to relocate to the main campus to earn their Bachelor's degree.
- The term 2+2 Program means that students complete the first two years of the program at a local community college. For the second half of the degree, Tennessee Tech offers courses on the local community college campus.
- Four degree pathways: Communication, Business, Leadership and Social Science
- Examples of courses that students can enroll in are Human Resource Management, Organizational Leadership, Principles of Event Planning, Occupational Sociology, and so many other exciting courses!

Finish your degree at Tennessee Tech!

Making the Decision to Return to College?
The top four things that are important to adult learners in making their decision on returning to college are:
1. Does Tennessee Tech have the program that I want?
The College of Interdisciplinary Studies offers the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) which allows you to customize your degree program with the guidance from an academic advisor to select areas of emphasis.
2. Are the classes convenient to the time and location I want?
Classes are offered online, on campus, and at a distance through area community colleges. The courses offered at the community colleges are evening cohort classes. The 2+2 BSIS adult learning program has emphasis areas in Communication, Business, Leadership and Sociology which is designed for working adults to juggle family, work, and the ability to continue their education.

- Roane State Community College: Crossville, Oak Ridge & Scott County campuses
- Motlow State Community College: McMinnville & Moore County campuses
- Cookeville Higher Education Campus (CHEC)
- Columbia State Community College: Lawrence County Campus
- Pellissippi State Community College: Knoxville Campus
3. Can I transfer my existing credits?
Tennessee Tech allows you to turn previously earned college credits into a marketable, accredited, and career-advancing Bachelor’s degree. Tech accepts credit from most accredited colleges and universities as well as TBR institutions. The above degree (BSIS) can also accept credit from AAS degrees earned at TBR institutions. Adult learners may earn college credit for prior learning achieved through work experience this program is known as credit for prior learning.
When transferring to Tennessee Tech, you’ll want to find out what credit will transfer when you arrive at Tech. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and exams are available through the Tennessee Tech Testing Center. For information on what credits may transfer, schedule an appointment with one of our members from the advisement staff.
4. How long does it take to finish my degree?
The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) degree requires 120 credit hours (course outline) and is designed to be completed in four years. According to how many credit hours you have previously earned, such as from an Associate of Science degree and how many hours you are able to take in a semester, you could finish within two years. Thus the purpose of the 2+2 adult learning program: 2 years from a community college and 2 years with Tennessee Tech University.
