Parenting Essential Program

We offer a series of ten instructional classes on a continuous, rotating basis. Each topic is designed to be taken independently, allowing participants to begin the series at any point. However, completion of all ten topics is required in order to receive a certificate of completion.

- » What are the eligibility criteria for participants?
Participants may be referred or be self-referred. Participants must be sober when in attendance. Participants must refrain from smoking or vaping inside the building. If participants are using any illegal substances while attending class, they will be asked to leave and will not receive credit for class.
- » What curriculum does the Center use?
The Center for Addiction Prevention and Support implements evidence-based parenting curriculum from a variety of sources depending on the topic of the course.
- » What are the qualifications of the Educators?
All parent educators have a minimum requirement of a BS in Human Ecology, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Health Care, or related field. Some educators have advanced degrees in the aforementioned fields and are Certified Family Life Educators (CLFEs). - » Will participants receive a completion certificate for evidentiary purposes?
All participants will receive a certificate of completion that includes the course and hours completed. According to research evidence, participants need a minimum of 8-12 hours of family life education to facilitate a change (Darling & Cassidy, 2014). Therefore, all courses offered at the Center will be a minimum total of at least 8 hours, while most courses will total 12 hours.
- » What is the referral process?
All referrals may be made to Adrienne Lees, Senior Prevention Coordinator at The Center for Addiction Prevention and Support. Her email is alees@tntech.edu. Interested participants may email Adrienne or fill out the form above to enroll in an upcoming class.
- » When are courses offered?
All classes meet on Tuesdays at 1-2:30, unless there is a holiday or break. All breaks and holidays will be announced on this website.
- » What is the Cost?
All classes are free. They are funded by a grant from SAMSHA through the TN Tech Center for Addiction Prevention and Support.
