Civil & Environmental Engineering

Welcome from the Chair

Ben MohrWelcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tennessee Technological University. As one of the largest civil engineering undergraduate programs in Tennessee and one of the most vibrant graduate programs in the region, the CEE undergraduate and graduate programs enjoy an excellent reputation. We have educated outstanding engineers, researchers and educators since the department was established. Graduates of our program have developed successful careers and served in leadership roles throughout the state, region, and nation.

The CEE undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, with the most recent accreditation granted in 2021. Our curriculum provides a strong foundation in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering mechanics. During the last two years of the student's undergraduate program, our students develop more in-depth expertise in selected areas of emphasis, including transportation, construction materials, structural engineering, structural mechanics, environmental, and water resources. In addition, our student success rates on the Fundamentals of Engineering exam are typically well above the national average.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in various student organizations, such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). Students in ASCE actively participate in educational outreach and civil engineering events, such as the concrete canoe and steel bridge, culminating in the annual ASCE Southeast Student Conference.

The Department offers the Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering including a combined BS/MS fast-track program. The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Engineering is offered through the College of Engineering with a major area of study in civil engineering. Active research programs in each of the major focus areas complement our graduate program. A significant number of graduate research and teaching assistantships funded through externally sponsored research (e.g., NSF, NASA, DOE, and TDOT), departmental resources, and affiliations with Tennessee Tech research centers are awarded competitively.

The CEE faculty is determined to continue to provide an outstanding education in civil engineering. We encourage you to learn more about our program and what Tennessee Tech Civil and Environmental Engineering can do for you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Benjamin Mohr, P.E.
