History

Joe L. Evins donated his papers to Tennessee Technological University in 1977, but the Tennessee Tech University Archives & Special Collections officially began when Tech hired its first archivist in 1985. In November 1986, the Archives opened its doors to the public in its original location in Derryberry Hall.

Purpose

University Archives & Special Collections educates researchers and students about primary source materials, preservation, and researching archives and special collections. We make collections available on site with some available digitally. We connect students, the community, and researchers to our collections through exhibits, outreach activities, classes, reference, and digital access.

Tennessee Tech University Archives serves as the repository for the records of the university and faculty by collecting materials of legal, fiscal, and historical significance to the university.  The Archives also document university personnel, administration, programs, and operations.

Tennessee Tech University Special Collections collects rare and original materials that relate to the Upper Cumberland Region, especially materials pertaining to Cookeville, the university, and prominent alumni. The goal is to acquire, preserve, and make available collections that include authentic and unique materials in support of university programs, faculty, students, the community, and the Upper Cumberland.
