Web Support
The Tech website is maintained by dedicated editors across campus. Whether you're updating a page for the first time or looking to build something new, this hub has the resources, guides, and support you need to get it done right.
All content published to the Tennessee Tech website must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards. This applies to every page, image, link, and document — including PDFs. Accessibility is not optional. If you have questions about whether your content is compliant, consult the Quick Reference below or contact Web & Digital Media.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the most frequent guideline violations we see from editors across campus. Review this list before submitting or publishing any page.
- » Using hard-coded URLs for internal links
When linking to another page on the Tennessee Tech website, always use the file browser to insert a dependency tag — never type or paste the URL directly. Hard-coded URLs break when a page is moved or renamed, and they bypass the CMS warning system that alerts editors before a linked page is recycled.
- » Vague link text
Links that say "click here," "read more," or "learn more" are an accessibility violation. Screen readers read link text aloud out of context, so every link must describe its destination on its own. For example: "View the undergraduate application requirements" instead of "click here."
- » Using tables for page layout
Tables are for data only — schedules, comparisons, figures. Never use a table to create columns or arrange content on a page. Tables used for layout are inaccessible to screen readers and break on mobile devices. Use multi-column snippets instead.
- » Skipping heading levels
Headings must follow sequential order: Heading 2, then Heading 3, then Heading 4. You cannot skip from Heading 2 to Heading 4. Skipped headings disrupt screen reader navigation and will trigger an error in Page Check. The page heading in Parameters is always Heading 1 — your content always starts at Heading 2.
- » Uploading inaccessible PDFs
Every PDF linked on the Tennessee Tech website must be fully tagged and accessible. Image-only PDFs — including scanned documents — are never permitted. If a PDF contains information that changes regularly or needs to be easily referenced, that content should be on a webpage instead.
- » Missing or generic image alt text
Every image on the website must have descriptive alt text under 125 characters. Alt text like "image," "photo," or "graphic" does not meet accessibility standards. Describe what is actually shown in the image clearly and concisely. Example: "Four engineering students reviewing blueprints in a lab."
- » Publishing empty or incomplete pages
Pages must contain a meaningful amount of content before they are published. Empty pages and pages that consist only of a PDF download link will be removed. If your page is still in progress, keep it in staging until it is ready.
