- What is the STEMobile?
The STEMobile is a 53' tractor-trailer with self-contained power, its own HVAC system, a satellite uplink for internet connectivity, and adjustable-height workstations for twenty-four students.
This classroom on wheels is stocked with equipment from the Oakley STEM Center and includes iPads and/or laptops, hand-held data collection devices, and other standard STEM instructional materials.
Additionally, teachers may borrow additional STEM materials and classroom kits for STEM modules to be on hand for classes to begin onboard through the vast inventory of the STEM Center’s Lending Library to supplement the equipping of the STEMobile.
- Book The STEMobile
If you are interested in booking the STEMobile, please complete the questionnaire below and a member of the STEM Center Team will be reaching out to coordinate details and answer any questions.
- History of the STEMobile
How do teachers introduce students to state-of-the-art STEM technologies if their schools don’t have the equipment? Tackling challenges like this, particularly in rural settings, often requires innovative solutions. Some might say it requires thinking “outside the box.”
The Upper Cumberland Rural STEM Initiative (UCRSI), however, decided the perfect solution was to re-envision what a “box” could do.
UCRSI finished the work during the summer of 2013 on the incredible learning “box” and named it the STEMobile. This mobile STEM learning laboratory provides a unique, on-site educational experience for rural PK-8 school children across the Upper Cumberland area.
The mobile classroom brings the much-needed technology to the doorsteps of schools in its 21 partnering districts. When they step inside, students have immediate access to state-of-the-art equipment to enable them to study STEM learning objectives set by teachers.
The STEMobile began visiting schools in October 2013. Teachers are trained in advance at the Oakley STEM Center to use the mobile learning studio, so they’ll be ready to make the most of the STEMmobile when it arrives.
