Generative AI Syllabus Statements 

As generative AI and AI tools continue to improve and be utilized in different capacities, the guidelines for using these tools in coursework have evolved. Depending on the course, faculty may have different expectations for the use of AI. We recommend clearly outlining when and how students should use these tools within your courses. Below you will find a few options for statements that can be added to the standard course syllabus template, or your individual course syllabi.

Please note, when utilizing AI tools, user data provided can be utilized for training AI models or other intentions. Therefore, the confidentiality of the information you provide is not guaranteed. Faculty and students should be mindful and refrain from sharing any sensitive or private data while using these tools. Examples of such data encompass personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), financial data, intellectual property (IP), and any other data that may possess legal protection.

  • Open Use Guidelines 

    AI is allowed to be used throughout the course so long as it is done so with proper citations and with attribution. 

    Optional addition to standard Tennessee Tech Course Syllabus Template

    AI policy statement: Permitted in this Course with Attribution. 

    In this course, Generative AI resources are encouraged to be used by students with the purpose of supporting their work. To ensure academic integrity, students must openly disclose any AI-generated material they utilize and provide proper attribution. This includes in-text citations, quotations, and references. 

    To indicate the use of a Generative AI resources, a student should include the following statement in their assignments: "The author(s) acknowledge the utilization of [Generative AI Tool Name], a language model developed by [Generative AI Tool Provider], in the preparation of this assignment. The [Generative AI Tool Name] was employed in the following manner(s) within this assignment [e.g., brainstorming, grammatical correction, citation, specific section of the assignment]."

  • Moderate Use Guidelines

    AI is permitted for specific assignments or within set parameters by the instructor. These specific instances are outlined in the course syllabus and assignment instructions.

    NOTE: For this option, you will need to identify which assignments / assessments or course elements the use of AI is permitted and for which it is not. 

    AI policy statement: Permitted when Assigned in this Course with Attribution. 

    In this course, Generative AI resources are allowed to be used for specific assignments or within set parameters, as designated by the instructor.

  • Closed AI Guidelines

    AI is not permitted for any use within this course. 

    Optional addition to standard Tennessee Tech Course Syllabus Template 

    AI policy statement: Not Permitted in this Course 

    In this course, Generative AI resources are not permitted. Students are expected to do all coursework themselves, as an individual or collectively, as designated by the instructor per assignment. The use of a Generative AI Tool to complete coursework constitutes academic misconduct for this course.
