Get It Now (GIN) Article Purchase on Demand
Tennessee Tech employees and graduate students have access to Get It Now (GIN), an article purchase-on-demand service. GIN offers users a way to obtain full-text articles quickly from journals without a library subscription. The library pays a fee per article up to $174 per article. This service is for users who need articles immediately; if the need is not immediate, please use InterLibrary Loan (ILL), which is fast and free!
The library's budget for GIN purchases is limited. Once the budget has been spent, GIN will be unavailable until the new fiscal year (July 1). Users are limited to 5 articles in a span of 8 hours. If a single user's high-volume GIN requests cause budget problems, they may be restricted from using GIN in the future.
- » Who can use GIN?
Only current Tech employees and current Tech graduate students.
- » What can I get through GIN?
Tech employees and Tech graduate students can get articles from publishers participating in GIN. There are approximately 20,000 journals available through GIN.
- » How do I use GIN?
GIN is only available through EagleSearch; there is not a place to enter a request outside of EagleSearch.
If a publisher/journal participates in GIN, employees and graduate students will see a GIN link when viewing an article's details. Follow the instructions to complete your GIN request. The article will be emailed to your Tech email address.
- » How long will it take to get a GIN article?
Typical delivery is under two hours with many articles emailed within 10 minutes. However, delivery may take longer. The average turnaround time for 2024-2025 was 18.1 minutes.
- » What does GIN cost?
The library pays a monthly bill for GIN based on the usage. Cost per article depends on the publisher, ranging from $3.50 up to $174. The average cost is around $35 to $55 per article.
- » What if articles from my favorite journal don't have a GIN link?
There are four reasons you would not see a GIN link for an article:
- The full text is already available.
- You are not a current Tech employee or graduate student.
- The publisher does not participate in GIN.
- The publisher participates in GIN, but the link isn't showing up.
If you want to verify that you aren't experiencing #4 above, please email Sharon Holderman with the journal title to see if it is available through GIN. If it is, the library will fix the link.
Please email Sharon Holderman with questions or if you need help with GIN.
