Online Education - Adult Learners

Balance Life, Work, and an Online Tennessee Tech Education!

We value the experiences adult learners bring and recognize that they often balance multiple roles beyond being a student.
That’s why accessible online education and strong student support are essential to their success.
We intentionally support adult learners through dedicated resources, including our virtual community and resource site.

  •  Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) or Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) may be earned at the undergraduate level through college credit earned in high school (dual credit or AP), credit by exam (CLEP), or relevant work, military, and life experience. Two academic areas also award CPL through review process: the College of Emerging and Integrative Studies (up to 24 credit hours in specific programs) and the Whitson-Hester College of Nursing (credit determined after review). In total, Tennessee Tech awards up to 60 undergraduate credit hours of CPL for eligible students.

What I value most about being an online student at Tennessee Tech is being able to attend college in my hometown - from home - as I take care of my children and work.

Lisa Melton, Interdisciplinary Studies major

Without the flexibility of online learning, a college education would not be possible for me. I have a home and a family, and I am employed full-time as well as being a caregiver to a parent. I would not be able to go to campus for classes.
