Environmental Health & Safety

Training Matrix

Employee training is a key component of any safety program. This matrix outlines the Environmental Health and Safety classes required for all Tennessee Tech paid personnel working in a lab or shop setting. The matrix does not include every training topic needed. Keep in mind that an employee must have training to do their job safely. Therefore, if they have duties that are potentially hazardous supervisors must ensure that appropriate information has been provided. Any time the duties, equipment and/or processes change, the employee must receive updated training. Training must be documented and records must be kept for a minimum of three years.

This training matrix is applicable to Principle Investigators (PIs), faculty, lab supervisors, shop supervisors, research personnel, graduate students, and undergraduate students that are paid Tennessee Tech employees.

Answer the questions below with your PI/Supervisor to determine which tasks are part of your job. If the answer is yes to a question, the course(s) listed to the right represent a training class/document that supports that task. If an “Available SOP” is listed, that document must also be reviewed as part of the training. Some SOPs listed require training to be documented. This document will be updated regularly as new SOPs become available and current SOPs are annually updated.

After the training listed in this Matrix is completed, completion of the Site Specific Training Checklist is required, and must be documented. This training document should be kept with the other training records for the lab/shop.

The Training tab contains instructions for completing training. The Tennessee Tech Training tab contains additional modules available for training that are not covered in the Training tab. The Site Specific Training tab contains documents for specific training checklists for labs/shops, the site specific training required for the Bloodborne Pathogen training (if applicable), and site specific training for operators of scissor lifts (if applicable).

Numerous regulations require that certain activities receive annual training. Training conveys the knowledge to give employees the ability to adequately address common situations that could cause harm to individuals, property, or the environment. Tennessee Tech utilizes various training resources including an online program (Vivid Learning Management System) to equip employees with these skills.

All training must be documented. If required, site-specific training must also be documented.
