Training Requirements

Employee training is a key component of any safety program. The responsibility for health and safety lies with everyone. However, it is the responsibility of the Supervisor to ensure that:

  • All employees are assigned and have received the appropriate worksite and job duty specific safety training.
  • Workers have been provided with the necessary information, resources and worksite specific training to perform their duties safely.
  • Training is completed and documented for every affected worker.
  • Training occurs before the individual begins work and when any new hazardous material, process, or equipment is implemented.

If training is not available centrally through Tech Express, the supervisor must conduct and document the appropriate training at the workplace level.

General Safety Training Requirements

  • Training may occur at the individual worksite or through Tech Express.
  • Each Supervisor shall determine how training requirements are met.
  • Supervisors must provide updated training whenever an employee’s duties, equipment, or processes change.
  • All training records must be documented and retained for a minimum of three years.

Student Training and Departmental Oversight of Student Safety

Students enrolled in Laboratory Courses will receive appropriate safety information and instruction from their instructor if class work involves hazardous chemicals, equipment or processes.

Departments with teaching laboratories should periodically conduct self-evaluations to ensure instructors and teaching assistants are providing appropriate safety information and instruction, enforcing safety rules and students are complying with them. These evaluations should be documented, as should any discrepancies found and steps taken to correct them.

Training Matrix

The Training Matrix outlines required safety training for all Tennessee Tech full-time paid employees. Supervisors should consult the Training Matrix when determining the required safety training.

Training can be accessed through Tech Express. Look for the icon that says "D2L Train" under quick links.

Supervisors can request D2L training enrollment using CITL request forms. The matrix is not exhaustive. Supervisors must review each employee’s job tasks to ensure they receive all necessary training, even if not listed.

Worksite Specific Training

After completing all matrix requirements in D2L, employees must also complete the worksite specific training conducted by their supervisor. This ensures employees understand hazards unique to their worksite.  All training records must be documented and retained.
