A workshop series offered with the Tennessee Tech College of Business

This workshop series is all about financial literacy, and empowering young people to take charge of their financial futures. It's open and useful to everyone, and it will specifically address the issues young people starting out in careers and navigating family life. Participants enroll in the entire series, and those who complete all the sessions will graduate at our April awards banquet.

Session 1: Building Credit

We'll kick off our workshop series by chatting about one of the most important ways to set yourself up for financial success: building credit. Credit is crucial to all kinds of financial transactions, from financing a car (or house!) to renting an apartment. Dr. Alma Nuñez, Professor of Finance in Tech's College of Business, will be leading our workshop.

Session 2: Creating Financial Safety

In this session, we will discuss how to create a secure financial base for yourself as you look ahead to the possibilities of family life, joint finances, and preparing for the unexpected in those areas. What sorts of things can you do to create financial stability for yourself and loved ones just in case family or household dynamics change? Jenna Matthews, legal assistant with Looper Law and current law student, with experience helping domestic violence survivors navigate the court system, will be joining us to  lead our session.

Session 3: So now you have a real job!

This session is geared to help you navigate starting a new job. Now, you'll need to consider benefits, and you will be in a place to budget your own full-time income for (perhaps) the first time. We'll discuss things to think about with benefits and ways to try budgeting--beyond a spreadsheet! Dr. Allison Toth, Assistant Professor of Decision Sciences and Management, will be leading our discussion.
