Maddie Maas
As a junior majoring in music education with a vocal concentration and a theater minor
at Tennessee Tech University, Maddie Maas has always been drawn to the power of music.
Growing up in California, Maas found her passion in choir, a journey that began in
sixth grade and evolved into a dream of becoming a music educator. It was her teachers
along the way who inspired her to pursue a career where she could share that same
love for music and others.
“Music has always been such an important part of my life. I had so many amazing teachers
who encouraged me to find my voice and share it,” she explained. “When I got to college,
it just felt natural to pursue music education because I knew I wanted to be that
same kind of teacher for others.”
Choosing Tech was a decision that felt right from the start. Maas says that Cookeville’s
small-town feel and the welcoming atmosphere of the campus made it feel like a home
away from home. What she didn’t expect was the deep sense of community she would find
within the School of Music.
“When I auditioned for the choir, I immediately fell in love with the program and
the professors. Dr. Zamer and Dr. Pulte made me feel like I was part of a family,”
she said.
Maas’s involvement extends beyond the classroom. She serves as vice president of the
Tennessee Tech Chorale, organizing fundraisers and events, and manages social media
for the Tech Players, the university’s drama club. These roles allow her to contribute
to the campus community while also honing her leadership and organizational skills.
“Being involved in so many activities has really helped me grow as a student and as
a person. It’s all about balancing your time and being organized. That’s something
I know will serve me well in my future career,” she said.
Her dream job after graduation is to teach high school choir, where she hopes to inspire
her own students just as her teachers inspired her.
“I want to build relationships with my students, not just teach them music but also
be there for them in all aspects of their lives,” she said.
One of Maas’s most memorable experiences at Tennessee Tech has been the opportunity
to travel with the Tennessee Tech Chorale.
“Every year, we go on tour, and every few years, we get to travel internationally.
This year, we’re going to Ireland and Scotland, which is amazing!” she exclaimed “It’s
such a fun experience, and it’s not just about performing, it’s about making memories
with your friends.”
With her passion for music, leadership skills and commitment to her craft, Maas is
well on her way to becoming the kind of teacher who will inspire the next generation
of students.
“Don’t be afraid to make new friends and get involved. The people you meet during
your college experiences and the relationships you build will be some of the most
meaningful in your life,” she said.
